[ And he'll keep lifting them up into the air, slow and steady. Not so high that he's going to crash into the roof or anything but either until Haruka tells him to stop, or he finds a height he's comfortable with. Probably still below the rafters. ]
no subject
Ahhh, this is really high! Do you just fly everywhere? This is better than walking...
no subject
He keeps his gaze on Haruka, making sure he's okay, but since it seems like he is... up here they'll stay! ]
Not everywhere; I did have a secret identity back home. [ A small laugh. ] Yeah, it's really convenient, but don't rule out walking. Getting to stretch your legs is good too, you know?
no subject
...until he hears the word secret and gulps. ]
R-right, your legs get really stiff if you sit in one place all day.
[ he uh, knows firsthand. ]
Why did you need to hide?
no subject
A blink, a bit of a frown at his apparent apprehension at the word secret, though. Is that a problem, or... ]
I wouldn't want anyone targeting my family to try to get to me. That already happened once, and it was bad. Really, really bad.
[ His emotions darken a bit at the memory, but that's all it is — a memory. And while he's still in overall a good mood, it's definitely dampened some now. ]
The fewer people who know, the better. I don't think it matters here so much when there are monsters outside, but back home? It does.
no subject
That's really...considerate of you. I'd want to protect my family too. Family's really important. [ a small smile. ]
You're a really strong person. I'm kind of jealous...
[ wistful and soft.
he's still kind of parsing the rest, the flying bit, how that would need to be a secret for some reason and what that means, but this tumbles out first. ]
no subject
There's different kinds of strength. I'm not going to deny I'm pretty different, but anything you can do to keep your family safe, I think it takes some level of it.
Because yeah. It's maybe the most important thing.
no subject
Anything... mmn, they definitely think I'm weak. And they...probably—definitely, don't want anything from me right now. But if I could help them, I still would.
no subject
I think it's that last part that counts more than anything. I have a... weird relationship with my dad. Kind of never wanted to see him again, and he tricked me into showing up for him last year. But he needed my help, and I did help him in the end.
So you never really know what people are going to do when the chips are down. And they're still your family.
no subject
people keep saying, the voices had said— ]
Yeah, that's true. I don't think-I don't know if they feel the same, but I still want to keep trying. [ if he has a strength, it's that his dedication and resolve is boundless. ]
Umm...what's your name? Here. Mine's Toby.
no subject
I'm Hiro now, I guess.
[ Said with a smile; he's still feeling overall light and happy. Haruka's just really easy to talk to, it turns out. ]
And yeah. I mean, I think at some point, when it comes to family... the good has to count for something, right? Even if there was also some bad.
[ At least that's how it's been for him! ]
no subject
[ very earnest, it's a shame he can't bow like this but hopefully his words get through enough.
and as for the rest...]
...yeah, it has to. I've been thinking that it might, but—I think I believe it more now.
no subject
It's nice to meet you too, Toby. But... yeah? Is that because of what just happened, something harrowing like that putting things more into perspective? Or is it something else?
no subject
[ from all the voices he's heard in his dreams and sometimes in his waking hours too, about how he's been forgiven. ]
I mess up a lot. I don't mean to, but I'm not that bright. But maybe I'm not all that bad. I think...maybe I can be good too.
[ it's a difficult thing to talk about understandably, his opaqueness mostly from not knowing how to put it into words. ]
no subject
I think anyone can be god. My dad... did some pretty bad things, but he wanted to do good later. It doesn't cancel out the bad, but it has to count for something. Otherwise, what's the point?
[ His hold on him remains firm, comfortable. Who knows when Haruka will get the chance to go flying again, so Mark's fine keeping the two of them up here until he's ready to touch back down. ]
Everyone messes up. I've messed up, too. But then I try to be better, and I think that's important too. So there's no reason it can't be the same for you.
no subject
he wants to ask what they both could have done but...he's not that greedy. not yet. instead he smiles, small. ]
I can't imagine someone like you messing up. [ they just met 10 minutes ago. still stands!!!! ] You're really cool and strong... and you can fly...
no subject
Mark just ducks his head, sheepish, at Haruka's assessment. ]
Well... thanks. But it's easy to mess up when you can do things others can't. There's a whole other spotlight on you and...
[ ah. he's a little embarrassed now! ]
... I just think what matters most is being the person you want to be.
no subject
sorry to mark that haruka doesn't really clock the embarrassment or rather, he doesn't quite understand why. ]
And if I don't know that yet? I should, but... [ well. things Happened and did Not Happen so his life is a mess. ]
no subject
[ That's plenty!! That's something for everyone to aspire to in Mark's eyes, really. ]
no subject
At my age I think most people talk umm, careers and pro-professions...
no subject
[ Back to feeling awkward for Mark, because he already got career-assigned superhero.
... ]
I don't really know anything about that. I think taking time to work on yourself, though. That's just as important, right?
[ Even more so, in his case. ]
no subject
but it's a work in progress, right? mmmn. ]
Hiro-san, can we talk again sometime? I like it.
[ haruka would never normally be this bold, but both curses work in his favor here. the greediness in wanting more of a nice thing and the emotions he's getting from mark that tell him this isn't entirely selfish. he thinks that's what he's feeling anyway and in some ways, he has good intuition. ]
no subject
Yeah, of course. [ He grips Haruka a little tighter; he can't properly hug him while they're holding each other like this, but that's the sentiment behind the motion. Haruka seems a little uncertain, and Mark wants to assure him. ] Any time you want. I know being here is kind of a lot, so I'd be happy to help any way I can.
[ And he means it, warm sincerity flowing from him. There's a lot Mark still can't do here, but that? He thinks he can. ]
no subject
he can't help it, he lets out a little giggle too. his joy is real and innocent, wholly uncontained. ]
Hehe... I can't believe I asked that, but I'm glad I did...if we can fly some more too? Ah, sorry, I'm just happy—
no subject
He is going to hold on to all of the good here that he can. ]
No, it's good! You're good. [ A little laugh. ] We can fly more too. Seriously, don't be a stranger, Toby, alright?
