…For the nth time today, he really wishes he had something to smoke.]
As I told you before, I’m not the one who’ll cast judgement on you. Here and now, your safety contributes to ours, which makes it just as important as anyone else’s. It isn’t selfish.
no subject
..you really don't think my life's worth less?
no subject
Will it change your opinion of yourself if I say yes or no?
no subject
I can't answer that, that's cheating.
no subject
Toby, as I know you now, I consider your life no more important, nor no less, than anyone else's. But life is hardly a straight line, and neither are the impressions of strangers or friends. They will rise and sink like ships at sea, all according to the actions you take.
If you wish to feel your worth, act like a worthy person. It is no more complicated than that.
no subject
I always try, but no matter how hard I do, I mess it up... so all I do is sink to the bottom of the ocean.
no subject
Do you feel as though you always say the wrong thing at the wrong time? Or something else?
[He has his own opinion, but he wants to know what Toby might think.]
no subject
Say the wrong thing... do the wrong thing...everything is wrong with me. [ though- ]
Well, I used to think that. Now, maybe, I'm not wrong always. Right?
[ he's started to change recently, but he hasn't yet gotten ahold of what that means entirely yet. ]
no subject
Not everything is wrong with you. Even if you tried for it, that would be impossible.
[ ... ]
It's all a matter of learning. Observing. Knowing what people expect, or what is polite to say, requires both practice and attention. To some degree, it can be taught. Perhaps you've never been given the chance.
no subject
he breathes a little deeper, more fully, into his core. ]
I wasn't good at school so my parents pulled me out...a few years ago now, I think. [ he lost track of time at some point. ]
...will you teach me? [ for once, he turns to properly meet him eye to eye; a blue as deep as the ocean with a shimmer of green. while he's not someone who's always avoidant with eye contact, he doesn't tend to hold it long or initiate it. ]
no subject
To observe? To read people? [To......deduce?] If you're willing to be an attentive student, then yes. I don't see the harm.
[And this seems... rather important to him. That look in his eyes, the fact that he will meet his gaze at all in such a way.]
no subject
I'll be atte-attenta—I'll try my best. [ he's guessing on the meaning of that word, but in this context his agreement is earnest none the same. ]
But I'm not that bright.
[ he tacks that on at the end, resisting the urge to look away. ]
no subject
If I'm to teach you, then I'll be the judge of that. Try. That is all I ask. I suspect you will see more improvement than you realize, with time.
no subject
Really? [ reflexive, he won't make holmes answer this again. he's just so used to hearing otherwise. ]
I'll try. I'll try a lot, my hardest! Let me know where I do bad or where I do good, just let me know, okay?
no subject
I will. You needn't worry about that. [He will offer praise where correct, and... correct when incorrect. Watson would know.] When you've recovered more, we can start immediately. Sharpening these skills will help you in this school, too, I've no doubt.
no subject
[ a beat. ]
...so I can't do anything now? [ he's ready to go, put him in coach. ]
no subject
Right now, you're hardly in a state for much of anything.
no subject
[ both in the mental breakdown department and in the viscera department. ]

no subject
Then should we go to the bathroom? [ find a bathroom, really. ]
no subject
[He saw a washroom nearby. Without saying much else, he turns and heads towards it.]
no subject
he draws his knees to his chest, settling in to wait. ]
