[. . .]
[At least. . . until a stiff breeze whips through the classrooms, scattering dirty papers and jerking the curtains aside. The clock strikes 6:00 a.m.]

no subject
No... I have.
[ ...Shouldn't he know that Segyein always outnumber humans???? Maybe things are different on his planet... ]
Do you normally see this many people...?
no subject
There are usually this many-- or even more-- packed onto the train cars every morning. You know. . . for the commute?
no subject
What?
[ guess who hasn't figured out everyone isn't just from different planets in her universe yet.... BECAUSE HUH???? With visible confusion: ]
Humans traveling on their own?
no subject
. . . yeah? Is that. . . abnormal? For you?
no subject
[ Outside the itty bitty croppings of rebels, of course it's abnormal. ]
The Segyein never let humans travel or do much without their guardian's supervision. Or "owner's," you might say... [ That's the less PC term for it, at least among humans. She genuinely looks confused. ] I thought... it was like that for all humans in the galaxy.
[ That is the widespread belief of all humans in her world. A blink, like she's awed, but also disbelieving of the information he's giving her. ]
no subject
[um]
[uhhhhhhh]
[softly, but with feeling: what the fuck]
No! It's definitely not like that where I come from?? Humans aren't. . . "owned" by anything? And they shouldn't be! That's pretty horrible!
[a pause]
. . . I've never heard of the word "Segyein," either.
1/????
2/3
This is all.... normal, to him?
Is she the only one who...? ]
3/3
Segyein.... um, "aliens."
[ She murmurs, sounding distant. In the back of her mind, she thinks she should probably feel happy that a human could be so ignorant of what aliens do to humans in other galaxies... but some part of her feels jealous, too. ]
Humans aren't... pets, or anything like that? [ She knows he just explained it to her, but she can't help her disbelief. Why do some of them have to go through this, but others are living completely normal lives? ] That's supposed to only be true for... rebels, and people in the slums.
no subject
No. [firm!] Humans aren't "pets" where I'm from.
[. . .]
. . . are they supposed to be "pets" where you come from? Because if so, that's. . . really messed up.
[. . . and thus, he understands why she is confused. why she might be a bit upset]
no subject
In spite of his question, her vision drifts to all the other people in the room. So, maybe that's why everyone had seemed so strange in the classroom before. It wasn't that they were resistance members, or from different planets than hers. There really are people out there who don't know anything about it.
She laughs, putting a strand of hair behind her ear. Upsetting as this is, she's compelled to not rock the boat, to not burden someone — perhaps particularly a man — with all this so early on. Getting too deep into it would only be showing weakness, wouldn't it? ]
Mm... that's "normal," "where I come from." [ She thought... they all came from the same place, so the phrase she parrots from him is stiff. ] I never thought I would meet humans who were totally free...
[ Rebellion members, yes. But even they still lived under the thumb of Segyein society. On the contrary, he seems to have no idea what she's talking about. ]
It must make being brought here even scarier.
no subject
I don't think that's true. [. . .] I think it can be equally terrifying for us both.
no subject
Being in that "classroom" felt familiar, [ Is what she decides upon after a pause, folding her arms. ] Even being here in this "school" is, too.
[ He's right, that doesn't mean it wasn't scary. Still, she's curious. ]
Have you ever felt like that before?
no subject
[. . .]
[he curls his fingers into fists for a brief moment, before releasing them slowly]
. . . I don't think so.
[not in the way that she clearly means it]
What do you mean by. . . "familiar?"
no subject
[ That's what it had boiled down to — being at the complete mercy of something else. Until very recently, Mizi barely knew anything outside of that.
Could he understand that? She's not so arrogant to believe that no one outside her own situation could feel that way, so she doesn't say it to look for pity or sympathy, nor to belittle his own experience, whatever it is. There's a bluntness to how she says it, like she doesn't know any other more elegant or soft way to phrase it. ]
It felt like — it was having fun watching. You know?
no subject
I-- [. . .] When you put it that way. . .
[he trails off, gaze flickering to the side, lingering upon something unseen for a brief moment. when she describes the sensation like That, he supposes. . . there have been a few times. . .]
[. . .]
[but he can't imagine his experiences were anything like hers. a sharp breath, and he turns his gaze back to her]
. . . if that thing messed around with us just for entertainment, then that's a pretty sick thing to do.
[MAYBE GHOSTS ARE SICK CREATURES??]
no subject
It made it into a game... and it was definitely watching.
[ If it was trying to be as quick as it could about it, couldn't it have skipped the whole 'look for the key' charade? That, to Mizi, makes her feel like it was enjoying there being a spectacle to it. ]
It probably still is now.
no subject
[he jerks back like a startled horse, gaze flickering to the side towards. . . towards what? what is over there?? whatever it is, it has his hackles raised, ever hair on the back of his neck standing on end]
. . . damn it! It's right over there--
[is it, though??]
no subject
Mizi whips around to where he's looking immediately, eyes wide and immediately on edge. Fight or flight kicks in, and her eyes go a bit wild looking for something around them to use as a weapon.
...
......
........ ]
...Was that supposed to be a joke?
no subject
[he trails off]
[. . . . .]
. . . you can't see it, can you?
no subject
[ Is what she starts with while she continues peering where he was looking. But then, when she turns her head back to him, there's a creepy ass doll standing right behind him. ]
—A... Ahhh!!
[ SHE'S DOING THE SAME EXACT THING AND STARING AT SOMETHING UNSEEN ]
no subject
Shit! Is it another one?!
[whirling around, holding up both hands on instinct, as if he is ready to. . . to what? punch a ghost? HOW WELL DOES HE THINK THAT'LL WORK FOR HIM!!]
[instinctively putting himself in front of her, too. defensively!!]
