[The school is empty. The school is quiet. The only sound that cuts through the silence is the soft ticking of the hallway clocks that mark the passing of each second.]

[At least. . . until a stiff breeze whips through the classrooms, scattering dirty papers and jerking the curtains aside. The clock strikes 6:00 a.m.]

A type of coffee drink, made with steamed milk, espresso, and a layer of foam on top.

It's not my favorite, but if made right it can be pretty good.

[decidedly not looking as they press forward, passing classroom after classroom, stepping over debris and rotten floorboards as they go]

. . . this place is barely holding itself together, isn't it?

I suppose it depends how you're defining barely.

[as if on cue, some of the rotted wood gives out underneath his foot, causing him to stumble as he sinks into the floor up to his ankle]

[calmly watches this and then offers her hand]

Are you alright?

[hissing a bit in pain as he takes her hand pulls his ankle-- it was his injured one-- out of the hole]

Yeah. . . I'm fine. That's not going to help the healing, though. . .

Are you worried about that?

[somehow, it's a genuine question with no judgment]

. . . actually, it's pretty low on my list of concerns at the moment.

I just wanted to complain.

[holding up both hands]

No, it's fine-- the wound isn't that deep, and one of the people in my group already bandaged it, so. . .

[accepts that it's been taken care of and yet immediately cranky at being refused]

Your ankle, I said.

. . . all right.

[WELL, HOW CAN HE SAY NO?? after a beat, he tugs up his pant leg to reveal one (1) bandaged ankle. the fabric serving as said bandage is openly stained red]

...It needs to be replaced.

I just had it wrapped, too. . .

[it must still be bleeding pretty sluggishly, if the cloth is already that red]
