[a little ice breaker]

Who: everyone!
When: throughout the week of August 10
Where: everywhere
What: a little mischief
Warnings: nada!

[On August 10th, everyone wakes up to find a series of red yarn strung across the entire school. They dangle from the hallway ceilings, from the classroom door frames, even across some of the trees and bleachers outside. The ones that hang within reach feel warm to the touch! They can be pulled down and removed with little consequence.]

[However, it is not the decorative threads you should be worried about. Throughout the week, any two characters who come in close proximity with each other (they do not have to touch!) may suddenly find themselves tied together with the exact same red thread. If you're lucky, it will only link you via your wrists. If you're unlucky, it might bind you via your ankles, or even wrap you both up back-to-back like a pair of captives. Hm! Concerning!!]

[Any time two characters are tied together, a playful voice echoes in their minds: Hehe. Share a secret. . .?]

[To be released, both characters must share a secret with each other! Something that the other one doesn't know! It should be something significant; the playful threads will not let you go unless it is. But the level of significance may vary from something light to something that is not, so ultimately it is player's choice as to what secrets count and which do not!]

[. . . anyway, for anyone who wants to avoid getting caught, the nurse's office and dorm rooms are completely clear! The threads are also fickle; it is possible for two characters to hang out without being tied up together, if you don't want to play with this effect. Otherwise, go forth and mingle with some optional forced bonding!!]

[that tone. . . Puck raises both brows as he pushes away from the wall, his balance now restored]

Does that mean you're volunteering to go first? By all means. It's awfully gentlemanly of you!

[good. set the tone!! then he can decide which of his own many secrets he wants to share]

[ He has a reason to try to stay on Puck's good side, given what they talked about before, but that doesn't mean he likes this, either. Even if he's already done this, it's not easy to talk about himself on a good day, and what if the secrets he's shared before don't work again? How deep is he going to have to dig? ]

Well — so long as it's for the sake of a friend...are you saying you'll follow my example?

[ This may also shape what kind of secret he shares... ]

[hah. well, that's one trait they share. . . the unease they both have when it comes to talking about themselves. Puck has managed to keep things light and superficial thus far; and because of that, the red thread seems almost. . . taunting. share a secret, it says. as though he is not a man of a thousand different secrets!! as though he is not the kind of person who would rather say as little about himself as possible, and allow others to come to their own conclusions!]

I'll have to, unless you want me hobbling after you like this all day.

[kicks at the red string again]

Besides-- you know me! . . . kind of!

I don't make uneven deals.

[well. that's not strictly true. if they are uneven in his favor, than that is fine!!!]

[ The corner of Aventurine's mouth tugs up. Smart man, playing right into the language that he knows Aventurine speaks. ]

And I don't make deals that don't pay off. So, I'd say we're on the same page.

[ Is he only talking about sharing secrets anymore? Who can say...but a moment later, he's humming thoughtfully, carding through his laundry list of unspeakable secrets that he now must give voice to. Which one should he choose to share with Puck? Which one would he want him to know?

... ]

I haven't mentioned much about my job back home to you, have I? Well...the way I managed to get it was by turning a trial for murder into a job interview.

[ A murder he very much did commit! But that's irrelevant. ]

[too clever by half!!]

[though whatever secret he had expected to get, it surely wasn't that one. brows raise to his hairline, mouth parting slightly in open surprise]

[. . .]

Was it your trial?

[not as irrelevant to Puck]

[ His smile sharpens, just a smidge. ]

It was. The alternative was hanging from the gallows, so you can understand why I was eager to prove myself.

[mmmm. . . this tells him a lot about the man he is dealing with, doesn't it? he schools his features back into something more neutral, giving a small nod at Garnet's response to his question]

I would've been, too.

[desperate men will do desperate things to keep their heads attached to their necks. Puck knows himself well enough to understand that he is not above such tactics. depending on the risks and the people involved, of course]

. . . who were you trying to impress?

[ Desperate men will do desperate things, even when their desperation is calculated, and they go all-in. Maybe knowing this about Garnet will weight on Puck's mind if what they spoke of before does happen, and their teams are pitted against each other. Just how desperate will they get, if those lines are drawn?

Maybe they won't ever have to find out, but Aventurine is no optimist. ]

Now, Mister Puck, I've done my due diligence and shared a secret, and until our instructions change to share more than one, you won't be getting any freebies out of me.

[ ...It's not really a secret, though, he just doesn't want to talk about it. ]

[ah]

[a few surprised blinks, before Puck lets out a tiny huff, his neutral expression cracking just a bit into amused exasperation. right. of course. no freebies]

Hey hey, don't blame me form my curiosity! That was a pretty heavy secret.

[and he was even polite enough not to ask whether Garnet was actually guilty or not. though. . . he honestly isn't sure it matters]

[. . . and maybe it's because Garnet gave him something meaningful to chew on, but. . .]

[instead of offering up something useless and irrelevant--]

I've served time. About three years, give or take a few months.

[sentenced to five total, but some of that had been paroled, considering his age at time of the offense. . . and his mother's deteriorating condition]

[ So, he's found himself on the wrong side of the law, too...like Puck, Garnet has to wonder if he was guilty of the crime he was accused of, but before he can get there, he has to ask: ]

And for which crime were sentenced for?

[ He won't ask about his guilt, but he at least will ask about this much, given what he shared. ]

[a tiny tilt of his head, his mouth curving into a knowing smile as he parrots some of Garnet's words right back at him]

No freebies.

[ That earns him a wry chuckle. Well played. ]

Fair enough. I won't bother asking if you were guilty, then — besides, it seems as though we've satisfied this pesky little thing.

[ The thread between them has indeed loosened, and Aventurine is able to tug it free. ]

[funny answer, that one!! not guilty the first time, horrifically guilty the second]

[but! Puck exhales a relieved sigh as the thread loosens, and he is quick to push it off, rubbing his now-freed ankle in relief]

Thank goodness, because I don't know what I would have done if we hadn't.

[died, maybe???]
