[feeling homesick?]
Who: the student body
When: October 9
Where: anywhere outside!
What: set fire to the rain
Warnings: some people might get chewed on by a fox
[On the morning of October 9th, a bright, almost ethereal glow flares from the rooftop]
[It lasts but a few seconds and can be seen from anywhere outside, as well as through the windows of the school. though it dissipates quickly, small bursts of light remain scattered in the sky, slowly floating down to the earth below. they are. . .]
[. . . small tongues of blue fire? they dance in the air like playful sprites, wiggling this way and that, inviting you closer with their whimsical shimmies. should you get too close to these sprites, you will hear a familiar voice echoing in your head. it is the voice of someone very close to you! someone you cared for. someone you once loved very, very much. someone you miss. someone you would do anything to see again]
[touch these tongues of blue flame, and that same person will appear before you, smiling with their hand extended. you will feel compelled to take it, almost as if you are in a trance. almost as if you cannot resist]
[the apparitions of your loved ones will attempt to guide you into the forest. characters who touch the flames will be reduced to a dreamlike state and compelled to follow them. this trance can be broken by another character with either a) a solid punch/stab/any kind of inflicted pain or b) a kiss. this knowledge is not known ICly, so you better get to experimenting!! if the trance is broken, the apparition will vanish in a whirlwind of blue fire with an irritated shriek, leaving nothing behind but a sense of loss and forlorn longing in the character who was affected]
[should a character's trance not be broken before they reach the woods. . . well. the apparition of their loved one will smile wickedly as it sprouts blue fox ears and three fluffy, blue tails at its back. its eyes will turn white, its teeth sharp, as its entire body shifts and morphs into a four-legged kitsune with blue fur and white-socked feet. the trance will be broken right as it attacks, as it attempts to sink teeth into its victim's neck and tear them limb from limb. whoops! looks like you got suckered into a miniboss fight!]
[the kitsune are pretty quick on their feet! they are difficult to hit, and their bites hurt, leaving an icy-hot sensation crawling across the skin at the site of the wound. they cannot be killed, but they can be injured with typical weapons (their blood oozes dark black), and they tend to balk when faced with more than one opponent. if you have a friend with you to fend them off, they are more likely to flee than not, curling up into balls of fur and popping out of existence with a bright blue spark of heat. the buddy system will be invaluable here!]

...But that doesn't make any sense. There's no going home here, unless that's what happens when they graduate — is that what this spirit is here to do? To take Rin-tan to graduate? That can't be right. None of this is right, and again Evil Eye pushes against him from within, not trying to take control, but reiterating what Jiji's own intuition is telling him.
Before he can think twice about it, he takes Rin's hand when it stretches out for her mother, stepping in between the pair of them. It's...a heart-wrenching thing to do, because he can hear just how much Rin wants to go with her mother, but —
It isn't her. ]
Hey, Rin, you gotta snap out of it! Are you hearing me at all?! Hellooooo?
[ As loud as he is, how could she not hear him? ]
no subject
—Kazu, huh? What do you think you're doing?
[ Keeping her from her mother? Who does he think he is? ]
You need to step aside.

His gaze flickers to the grip of her katana, before meeting her gaze again. ]
I know...it means the world to you to see your mom. I...know.
[ His relief when he'd reunited with his parents after they very nearly lost their lives was immeasurable. Had he really lost them...he doesn't know what he'd do. Not grow as strong and amazing as Rin, that's for sure.
He takes a step forward, closing the gap between them to rest his hands on her shoulders, jostling her gently, but enough he hopes it might pull her attention towards him. ]
But this isn't her. Is this something your mom would ask you to do? To follow her into some dangerous woods full of monsters? What would she be doing at this school, anyway?

But there's nothing for her part, here, as she stares at him, brow furrowed and her lips still tugged into a frown. She hears him— but listening...? ]
What are you talking about..? Get out of my way, already.
[ Behind Kazu, the ghost of Nei's mother waits, smiling as serenely as ever, waiting patiently but beckoning Nei with a wave of her hand. ]
I have to reach her...
no subject
Which...is probably for the best, considering that reasoning isn't really his forte. He'd hoped giving her a shake might jostle her common sense, might bring out some of that usual fire that reminds him of both Momo and Aira in equal parts, but she's still so subdued, so distant, so...
So not like the Rin he knows at all. ]
C'mon, you've gotta listen to me! It's like you're not even here!
[ ...But there is something he could try, something that might just get her attention, short of trying to fight her, and he sure as hell isn't about to do that. But what if he can get her to start a fight with him instead...? What has always annoyed her the most in the past?
...This is so not how he imagined this ever going, yet here he is. ]
Yaghhhhhh! Gonna!! Take it to the next!! Level!!! Keyooootie pie!!!
[ And in so saying, flushed red as a beet, he cups her jaw between both of his hands and leans in to kiss her squarely on the lips. ]

Let— Let go of me— mommy! I'll be right there, don't leave me—

She's made aware of how close they are, first. Now, all she can see is Kazu. Then— their lips. ]
no subject
She pushes him away immediately. ]
What the hell are you doing, Kazu!?

He lets out a sigh of relief. ]
Thank goodn—
no subject
Quickly, he's pressing his hands together in front of himself, bowing steeply. ]
S-sorry! I'm really sorry, Rin-tan! I didn't know how else to get you to snap out of it!! Y-you were just all — and she was all —
[ He doesn't regret it...even if this makes her hate his guts now. ]

[ And then she remembers. She, her mother, whom Rin had found standing outside and...
And...
That wasn't her mother. Another ghost? Another way in which this place has decided to taunt and torment her with her past?
In that moment, she forgets entirely about the fact that Kazu just kissed her, her mind suddenly flooding with the words and please of the last few minutes as Nei, entranced, tried desperately to cling to her mother who's been dead for ten long years. Her mother who she still... hasn't avenged. Who she's not strong enough to avenge, as she is. ]
You mean... my mother. So it was her this time, wasn't it? These ghosts just love to mock me, don't they? I swear... [ Her voice has gone rough, etched with anger. ] I swear I'll hunt them down.
[ She may be free of the ghost's thrall now, but what of her (alleged) curse...? ]
no subject
Rin. If you try to hunt them down now, the same thing might happen again. I get wanting to go after them, but...we're in their territory.
[ And therefore at a distinct disadvantage. He's not exactly the sharpest tactician around, but even he can tell it would be a bad idea to go after the kitsune now. ]
One step at a time. Right? We can figure his out.
