Invasion of the Anzens

Who: Some Anzens & you
When: July 29
Where: Dorms
What: just friendly people being good neighbors
Warnings: N/A

[ Knock knock, open up, there is some number of Anzens at your door.

A pretty lady in sky blue smiles and waves. ]

Good evening. Hopefully this isn't a bad time? Enough time has passed that we figured it was a good idea to check in and make proper introductions.

You'll have to forgive the lack of housewarming gift. We're a bit shorthanded at the moment, which I'm sure you can relate to.

[ From behind her peers a perfectly average guy with tousled hair dressed in sky blue slacks. He gives a friendly wave! ]

We did think about it, though.

[ GIVE BROWNIE POINTS ]

I don’t think you’re actually any worse off than we are. Some of us have experience but like, we were still caught too. Expecting things to work like we’re used to could hinder us more than it helps.

[. . . hah. he thinks she is saying that just to make him feel better, but. . . it is working]

I guess you have a point there. And I'm pretty adaptable.

[or! so he likes to think!]

By the way, I don't think I ever caught your alias?

[not "her name," because they aren't. . . names, really. are they?]

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2025-08-01 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Adaptable's one of the best things you can be. And with it, maybe you can pick up some magic anyways!

[it's possible!!]

It's Eowyn for now. I might change it later.

[uh]

[blinks at her in open bemusement??]

Oh-- I've chosen Puck. Maybe I'll change it, too. But for now, I like it.

. . . I think you have a little too much faith in me, though.

[he absolutely does not think he could learn magic. in his mind that's kind of an inherent. . . bloodline thing?? like, people are just. born into it??]

Cute! Like from Shakespeare?

But you might though! Have you ever had the chance to try?

[. . . . . ;;;;;;;]

Like the "pu" in "Cappuccino!"

[yes, like from Shakespeare]

And of course not. That kind of stuff doesn't exist where I come from!

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2025-08-01 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Still cute!

Magic exists here though, so who knows! Maybe you just need the opportunity.
ordimame: (33)

[personal profile] ordimame 2025-08-02 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
. . . what would an opportunity even look like?
bowtiedbones: (22)

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2025-08-03 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Probably like lots of studying.
ordimame: (34)

[personal profile] ordimame 2025-08-04 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Studying. . . what? A bunch of text?

Even if I read every book on magic in the entire world, I don't think that'd teach me how to use it.
bowtiedbones: (32)

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2025-08-04 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
For mine, if you want to do magic, you get way better results if you understand the science of what you’re doing. Like I’m a necromancer so I study anatomy. A fire mage better understand thermodynamics.

And every kid starts out by learning to draw a perfect circle.

[personal profile] ordimame 2025-08-05 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[. . . ?]

Aren't science and magic two different things?
bowtiedbones: (79)

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2025-08-05 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure? Technically? Math and science are two different things too, but like you’re not going to do chemistry without equations.
ordimame: (247)

[personal profile] ordimame 2025-08-06 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
. . . point taken! I guess I never thought about magic that way. . .?

[because it doesn't exist where he comes from]

Not that I ever had any reason to before now.
bowtiedbones: (22)

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2025-08-06 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
If I get my abilities back, I can show you a demonstration later. Like a lot of people know how to reheat coffee, right? It's an easy sigil to put on a coaster. But do it wrong and you'll flash-boil it!
ordimame: (148)

[personal profile] ordimame 2025-08-07 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[. . . well. he already got a demonstration from Styx so. . .]

Oh-- sure. What better way is there to learn than to witness something firsthand?

[he will lose his mind when it happens, but. . . perhaps less than he did when he saw Styx summon his weapon]

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2025-08-07 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[apologies in advance for the day she gets any one of her dragon ghosts back]

Right? Learning by example.
ordimame: (177)

[personal profile] ordimame 2025-08-07 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[THERE WILL BE NO MENTALLY PREPARING HIMSELF FOR THAT ONE]

What made you want to learn magic in the first place?
bowtiedbones: (32)

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2025-08-07 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I just thought it was cool. I wanted to be a beastmaster when I was little, but then I got into dragons and all the biggest and coolest dragons were extinct. So... necromancy!
ordimame: (12)

[personal profile] ordimame 2025-08-08 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
[. . . valid!]

What kind of jobs does a necromancer usually take?
bowtiedbones: (79)

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2025-08-08 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Well for me, I'm a scientist. I work with paleontologists and zoologists. But I know others who are in like, the veterinary or medical fields too. For most mages necromancy's not like, the full-time part of their job, but it helps if you're doing anything with bodies. Or preservation!

There's also a bunch of theoretical necromancers, but they're mostly just annoying.
ordimame: (11)

[personal profile] ordimame 2025-08-08 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[huh. . . huh! her world is nothing like what he was imagining (he was imagining high fantasy with wizards in gray robes and fairies)]

What's the difference between a theoretically necromancer and an actual necromancer??
bowtiedbones: (59)

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2025-08-12 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
The difference is that I actually do necromancy. They write books and snippy "reviews" in the journals.
ordimame: (68)

[personal profile] ordimame 2025-08-13 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
. . . how can you "review" something if you're not even an expert in it! Shams, the lot of them.

[at least. he thinks so]
bowtiedbones: (42)

[personal profile] bowtiedbones 2025-08-19 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Total shams! They're so stuffy! Don't tell me how to write my arrays when you're not the ones standing in them for seven hours!
