[ Maybe you saw the invite slipped under your dorm door or maybe you followed the trail of confetti leading down the hall, but one way or another..! Welcome to Hanabi's birthday party! ]

[ Kai-un has taken over an empty classroom and decked it out in full party style! Balloons, streamers, the works! The desks have been shoved to the side of the room to clear space for mingling and dancing, and the teacher's desk has been turned into a snack buffet. It looks like there's even party favors...!

So grab a drink, get some cake, and have fun! ]

So... what is customary at birthday parties here? Apart from eat cake.

It's mostly about having fun! There's also a part where people sing a song to whoever's birthday it is, and then she blows out candles and makes a wish.

Isn't blowing out the candles a little... morbid?

[shouldn't the candles represent their life, or soul, or something]

Oh. I suppose the meaning must be different... normally, a lit flame would symbolize one's enduring soul. Warm, beautiful, and alive - bringing light to all those around it. And easily snuffed out.

That sounds like something you'd hear at a funeral. These ones are um, you get a candle for every year of your age. They're bright and happy. And if you blow them all out at once, that's good luck. You're celebrating what's already passed and looking forward to next year.
