There's a couple theories for when it comes to real spirits. Like I know I get better results with my summonings at night, especially if I can hit midnight. But for humans, or for anybody creeped out by the dark, really— and that's what it is, being creeped out by the dark. Even if there's nothing there, you'll imagine things. And if there is something there, that can be a boost. There's less going on. There's no distracting noises, there's less visual distractions, there's less activity going through and disrupting their formation.

A ghost can't haunt a packed crowd in a park, but one scared person in a hallway can give them their full attention.

I dunno about that last part, lady dude, like, maybe it really is just the not seeing thing. Because ghosts and zombies and shit like that, I've seen 'em all in big wide open places doing their fucking worst before. Hallways are tight. It's hard to get in a good place, but a field? They can swoop all over the place without getting fuckin' cornered.

I only really know how the ones at home work. I could put a ghost in a field, or a um, zombie, but that would be one under my control with my magic to support it. The independent ones are really fragile. There's not a lot holding them together.

Your experience is probably closer to whatever's going on here. I can make a really good dragon, but natural hauntings are only something I've read about.
