[they're small bones, very birdlike, but very lizardlike too. the head has a beak, but it has spikes too. eliza takes the bones and starts laying them out in the right order. there's no puzzle to it— as teeny and as many as there are, she knows exactly where each one goes. her little dragon has fingered wings like a bat, a long possibly-prehensile tail, clawed legs, and a pair of small arms.]

Yep! This is one of my familiars. I don't articulate my skeletons, so she's in pieces until I can wake her up.

She's cute. If they're willing to give us these things, I wonder if they'll let us use our powers.

I would like to see this ability of yours in practice. Do these familiars do your bidding, or are they fully autonomous?

They're semi-autonomous? Both? They have their own wills and personalities, but they're obedient to me. I can summon other creatures with varying levels of control, that's all worked into the array or the initial ritual, but my familiars are literally bound to me. I want them to be able to act for themselves. They need to be able to react to things before I do.

What a useful little trick... something like that would certainly come in handy in a place like this.

Right? Tuxie is just an assistant, but if I could get my male dragonwolf— He’d be great. His very job is protecting me from spirits and magical threats! If I’m doing a summoning and something tries to interfere, he takes them out!

Or if I could call a hellhound. I don’t need bones for that, I just need a fire and my magic to work. She’d do the job too!

Does sustaining that many at once not tax you?

I have ways to work around it. My biggest familiar is my youngest, so that makes that easier, and my familiars with the oldest hosts are a pack-bonded pair, so they help maintain each other that way. And Tuxie is just small. I usually don't have all four awake at once! Usually three at most, and that's when I'm working.

And that's when the effort is worth it! They're all magical familiars, so they actually expand the pool of energy I have to work with. It's like, I produce more than I can store myself, so they hold the extra, allowing me to access it for larger spell workings.
