no room in her for anything else but sobbing. not even able to remember why.
the very sound of it distressing, closing a loop. she hates the sound, she hates the feeling, she hates that her eyes hurt from it. pressed between a wall and it.
Girl comes, Girl goes. the crying does not stop...
but for a moment, at last, when the smell of the food reaches her.
long enough to crawl from the bed and take the tray into the safety of the room with her.
but it resumes again soon enough. ]

-- and then she realizes, again, for the dozenth time, that he was never there at all.
So she's wide awake when she hears that clumsy noise at her door. She thinks about ignoring it. She's ignored them before. She decides to just ignore it now and lays back down in her bed, so she can go back to not falling asleep.
A minute passes.
She remembers the last obstacle in that cave. Where she had convinced herself she needed to volunteer a second time. Then, the tiefling woman volunteered in her place. And for a second, Girl thought she was off the hook. Then, she reached out, grabbed her hand and did the same thing.
Why did she do that?
She stares at the ceiling for a few more seconds - she eventually decides getting up is less annoying than letting that question bounce around in her brain, so she gets up. And she opens the door a crack and, as per usual, glares out around the edge.]

she is curled on the bed in the tightest ball possible. her room a mess. every book, every note page, every scrap of paper thrown about, left in that sorry state. spines bent, pages crumpled, edges frayed, stained with ink and droplets of wet.
much of her own writing now beyond recall. ]

It is less good that he recalls stepping into this room once, only briefly, something about a plant, barely remembering his classmateโs name โ a tiefling, though, he remembers her calling herself. But there was permission once, and surely there might be again? Maybe she might stop sobbing if she can ground herself in something other than what ails her.
Maybe distraction is optimal for both parties.]

this sure is a face that is new but also familiar in some ways: black hair, brown eyes... voice even familiar if she's heard it before, just a lower timbre.
