[what is important is that he eventually emerges and immediately beelines for their coffee table of treats. he eyes the red bean buns warily, but his attention is immediately arrested by a slip of paper that reads, "barrier"]

Well, it's a pretty common thread across several mythologies and cultures that names hold power. If the wrong entity with the wrong sort of intentions got their hands on someone's true name, they'd be able to control them.
