[5:30-ish in the morning. The sun rises early here! And so does a certain detective… sometimes.]

[ throws her pillow at the door. she knows who it is based on the knock alone. no one else in Kin'un would do this. ]

Do you never sleep?

Ms Fairplay. It is quite important.

[Ignoring the sound of the pillow hitting the door.]

but the sound of dragging herself out of bed follows. shortly, of dressing. ]

[Hm! Good. A satisfied lilt to his tone, muffled through her door:]

I presume you are willing to accompany me on a little investigative endeavor this morning?

What is it this time?

[ this man. this man... a tour de force. a force of nature. she appreciates and despairs that inquisitive nature.

upon her opening the door, he will find her glasses are sliding down her nose, her hair falling from its chopstick bun, and her clothes entirely rumpled. ]

He looks her over, quirking a crooked grin. Holmes, of course, looks immaculately put together for so horrid an hour in the morning. Eager, full of energy, as he often is when he is ready to go flying out the door to investigate something.]

[ that place so queerly barred to them. ]

[ it's both relieving and impinging that he has developed his own similar curiosity for it, whatever lays upon a floor inaccessible. everything about it has the hallmark of something important and deliberately warded. something is up there. someone is up there.

how long has he been up, waiting for the minutes to spend until he felt it reasonable to wake her? she feels a small twinge of pleasure that he looks to her. ]

And what morbid things do you hope to discover, Mister Adair?

[She is the one person here who knows the truth behind his investigative nature. This puts upon her the expectation that she will help him with such endeavors when the mood strikes, whether or not she's asked for it, which may be flattering at best, and obnoxious at worst.

At least he has chosen a subject that she has (unknowingly) aligned with her own interests, so it works out for him.]

I hope to discover anything at all. What is up there. Who is up there. And why is this mystery partitioned so stubbornly away from observation?

[ steps out, closing the door behind her. they are chest-to-chest for a moment, unless he also steps back. ]

[That is not surprising. She has been theorizing about this place nearly as much as he.

He looks (way) down at her for a moment before he does take a step back, thank you. Now that she is out in the hall, she might notice that there is a... mattress. Propped up along the corridor wall just farther down.]

My suspicion is a sweeping one: there is something crucial up there, and we are being kept from it either for our own safety, or because it is somehow critical to our existence in this school, and thus protected accordingly. Perhaps both may be true. Yet there is no way to verify, and if we cannot reach the roof from the inside, I would like to test if we can from the outside.

[ yes, she had posited this potential herelf, too. ]

And that? [ arches a brow and slants her gaze towards the mattress. she's speaking quietly, in respect for the early hour. of course she gets its purpose. but she likes to tease. ] You expect us to fail.

back to her room, where she changes with hands that begin to finely tremble: adrenaline. the anticipation of discovery, but also repercussion. they must be so, so careful, and even if they are... well. she remembers Miss Botan's blood. she remembers her fear.

emerging again, she has traded her skirt for trousers and is in the process of rolling her sleeves. ]

You have practice climbing buildings?

[Well he sure hopes she’s wearing both!

Find him grabbing one end of the mattress and beginning to drag it down the hall once she emerges. Holmes, on the other hand, seems all determination.]

Somewhat, yes. Scaling down is always easier than going up, but there are times when one must test whether or not access to higher floors is viable through sure-footed climbing alone.

[Gestures for her to come closer.]

[ down certainly will be easier than up.

Severine bends down to heft her side of the mattress. it's heavier than her own back home, but still no real struggle. ]

I would like that it was larger, but...

[No real struggle, especially between the two of them. It is as unwieldy as any mattress, but they should manage to get it out the door and outside the school without incident.]

We make do. Let us hope, first, that we do not need it at all.

[ no real struggle, but she's barely a head above the mattress when he's holding it at a height comfortable to him. huffing and puffing would commence, but she's too much dignity to even play at it. he might confuse it for sincerity. ]

At least Holmes is kind(?) enough to be the one walking backwards as they move out of Kin’un and down the hall.]
